If you’re self-employed and not structured as an S-Corp, you may be eligible to deduct your health insurance premiums “above the line” on your personal tax return (Form 1040), even if you don’t itemize.

Requirements:

  • You must have net profit from self-employment.

  • The policy must be in your name or your business’s name.

  • You (or your spouse) must not be eligible for employer-subsidized coverage elsewhere.

What’s deductible:

  • Health insurance premiums (medical, dental, vision)

  • Long-term care insurance (limited by age)

  • Premiums for spouse, dependents, and children under 27 (even if not dependents on your return)
