Living in Seattle or Bellevue doesn’t automatically mean all your tax obligations are Washington-only.
Even though Washington has no state income tax, you could still have filing or payment responsibilities in other states if you have certain connections there.
Here are the most common situations where people in the Seattle/Bellevue area discover they owe another state:
1. You worked or earned income in another state
-
If you physically worked in Oregon, California, or any other state (even briefly), that state may require you to file a nonresident income tax return for income earned there.
-
This also applies to remote work: some states tax income based on where the employer is located, not just where you live.
2. You own property in another state
-
Rental income from property in another state is generally taxed by that state, even if you live in Washington.
-
You might also owe property taxes or special assessments there.
3. You run a business with multi-state activity
-
Washington-based businesses that sell or operate in other states may trigger sales tax, business license, or income/franchise tax obligations in those states (nexus rules).
-
For example, an e-commerce store selling to California residents may need to register, collect, and remit California sales tax.
4. You have investment or partnership income from another state
-
If you’re a partner, S-Corp shareholder, or LLC member in a business operating in another state, you may be required to file there — even without setting foot in that state.
5. You recently moved
-
If you moved into Washington during the year from a state with income tax, you’ll likely have to file a part-year return there for the period before your move.
Seattle/Bellevue residents often overlook these until tax time, especially when:
- They commute to Portland for work.
- They keep a rental in California after moving.
- They run an online store with large out-of-state sales.

If money, property, or work crosses state lines — even without you physically moving — there’s a chance you have another state’s tax obligations.
